The Five Elements
Long before atoms were named, Chinese sages described the universe as a living dance of five forces. They saw these forces in the turning of seasons, in the human body, in emotion — and in the stones beneath their feet.
The Cosmology
In the Warring States period, around 300 BCE, the philosopher Zou Yan proposed that all reality emerges from the interplay of five phases: Metal (金) and Wood (木) and Water (水) and Fire (火) and Earth (土).
These are not literal substances but movements of energy — Wood rises, Fire flares, Earth stabilizes, Metal condenses, Water flows. In a healthy life, all five are present in harmony. When one is missing or weak, imbalance follows.
From your birth date, the Chinese calendar’s Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches reveal the arrangement of these elements at the moment you were born — read across the three pillars of year, month and day. For two millennia, this system has guided everything from medicine to marriage to statecraft.
The Dance of Energy
The Cycles
Generating Cycle
Each element feeds the next in a circle of creation:
Wood feeds Fire → Fire makes Earth (ash) → Earth bears Metal → Metal carries Water → Water nourishes Wood.
Controlling Cycle
Each element also holds another in balance:
Too much of one element can suppress another — which is why balance is the goal of crystal therapy.
Chinese Calendar
The Zodiac and the Five Elements
Most people outside China know the zodiac — twelve animals, one for each year. The Dragon. The Rabbit. The Tiger. It's the part of the Chinese calendar that travels furthest.
But the zodiac is only one pillar of the Five Elements chart. It comes from the year you were born — not the month, not the day. In the Chinese calendar, the year is written as a pair: a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch. The branch gives you the animal. The stem gives you an element.
The year is the first pillar. Your month and day are the other two. Together they form a three-pillar chart — the version we use here. Two people born in the same year share the same zodiac animal, but their element charts can be completely different, because their months and days are different.
The zodiac tells you which year you were born in. The Five Elements tell you what you're made of.
